2008 Oahe Deer Hunt

Date:11/15/2008 12:00:00 AM

November 15-16, 2008, the North Central Chapter PVA, Corp of Engineers, and the South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks hosted the 2008 Oahe Deer Hunt in Pierre, SD. There were 10 resident and 2 out of state tags issued for this hunt. Everyone headed out early Saturday morning in hopes of shooting their 30 point buck or at least a nice doe. The temperatures were very chilly but that didn’t stop the avid hunters from getting in their accessible blinds. This is a unique hunt because no other hunters are allowed to hunt this parcel of land. After the first day, many of the hunters were able to fill their tag. On Saturday evening, JoAnne Hemple prepared an excellent dinner with all the fixings and homemade desserts at the Pierre, SD American Legion Hall for all the hunters and volunteers. It was another early morning for those who did not fill their tags on Saturday. This hunt would not be possible without the help of the Corp of Engineers and the South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks and all of the dedicated volunteers. We look forward to returning to Pierre again next year.

15th Annual Platte Pheasant Hunt

Date:11/7/2008 12:00:00 AM

The 15th Annual Platte Pheasant Hunt was held November 7-8th and once again it was termed a success. Early arrivals on Thursday evening, Nov. 6th were served a meal of pheasant by the Legion Auxiliary at the American Legion Hall. Early Friday morning they were served breakfast and then headed out to the Lyle Nepodal farm where they found good shooting, taking 38 birds, in spite of the cold, windy, and snowy weather. Hunters from Alaska and Platte-Geddes High School students walked the fields on Friday. A banquet was held Friday evening at the Platte Community Center. A live auction of several donated items was held. Saturday the avid hunters shot 36 birds at the Leonard and Carol Weins farm. Members of the Platte National Guard unit helped walk the fields on Saturday. Clarence Blunck of Platte, deserves much of the credit for the success of the event once again along with the help from other Legionnaires, Legion Auxiliary, Platte Pheasants Forever and East River Sportsmen Club.
